The principle of proportionality is vastly more important than any other consideration in our electoral system. To maintain proportionality it will be necessary to allow one of two things to happen, and thus they must be allowed. Either constituencies would need to be allowed to contain more people, and thus the south island have fewer electorates than currently, in order to keep the number of electorates steady in the face of population growth and redistribution, or else parliament must be allowed to increase in it's numbers in line with population growth. Which option is allowed does not matter, so long as proportionality is maintained.
