Submitted on 22/02/2012 - 5:26pm relating to the issues Basis for eligibility for list seats (thresholds), Order of candidates on the list, Proportion of electorate seats to list seats
Should the 5% threshold be kept or changed? Why? If you recommend change, what should it be and why?:
The 5% threshold needs to be reduced. 4.9% is a lot of voters that don't get representation. Make the threshold 1% to have one representative.
Should the one electorate seat threshold be kept or changed? Why? If you recommend change, what should it be and why?:
If the above system is used, then no change is required
In an election, should voters be able to alter the order of candidates from the list order decided by political parties?:
Yes, at the moment we have half the house made up from unelected individuals. The voter must have some input into list candidates.
If you recommend change, how should this be done?:
Voters should be able to select the people they want on a party's list not the party
Is this a problem, and what should be done to fix it?:
The number of list candidates needs to be reduced. I use the Greens as an example. Not one person they have in the house has been elected, and they have a lot of people. They are all appointed by the party, the voters have no say as to who they are. I believe that the number of electorate seats needs to be increased, and the number of list seats reduced. I would be more comfortable with 70% electorate seats, and 30% list seats.
